I was born in the mid 90s, so I luckily missed out on the trend of big hair in the 80s. But thanks to my parents, I have seen what could be created back in them times. They really did go by the saying "the bigger the better!". There were so many different hairstyles created back in the 80s that were truly amazing, yet they make you think to yourself, what were you thinking?!
The 80s showed the world what big hair and bright colours really looked like. These were fashioned by some of the biggest names around in the 80s so that had a huge impact on there fans because they wanted to be just like their heros. These big names include the likes of Madonna, Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston.
No matter if you were male or female, in the 80s, you needed big hair! A few examples of the 80s big hairstyles are the side ponytail, the perm, an asymmetric cut, and also they beauty that was the mullet.
The side ponytail was mainly worn by teenagers in this decade. This hairstyle was achieved by pulling all the hair to one side of the head, into a ponytail, sometimes a scrunchie would be added around the hair band. Some were extremely tight with big ponytails and others were messy. Nearly all were feathered back to accommodate this look to make it fuller. A fringe, or as some know it as, bangs, were also often cut into the hair to add an extra little something to the look. In my opinion, not all the side ponytails looked bad, but some just sent it over the top!
The perm was one of the most popular 80s hairstyles because it gave off the biggest hairstyles, although it made you resemble a Poodle. These were either permanent or semi-permanent. This look was achieved by dousing the hair in chemicals and then sitting underneath a heated machine that did the rest of the work. This was mainly done in a salon, but some would have been brave enough to get their friend to play with their hair in the bathroom to try to get the perm look. Perms are still about today, but not as big, they're a little more subtle than back in the 80s.
I feel as though I have to confess to the fact that this is actually my mother, Andrea, and my father, Mark. My mum here, shows a good example of the perm look. Although many celebrities had bigger perms, like Cher. Trust me, they both look better now than they did in their 20s!
The asymmetrical hairstyle came to light in this era too, for reason I really don't understand! This look was created by having one side of you hair cut longer than the other side and then it mets together round to back to create a curve. It almost resembles an angling bowl shape haircut. Although it wasn't an overly big trend, it did start in the 80s and we have seen some examples of it repeating itself in the 00s and some today. With the likes of Beyonce and Rihanna fashioning the look.
I saved the best to last to write about, and that's the mullet. It was awful in my opinion! Who ever thought that actually looked good?! It was more popular on men than women, but some women out there braved the look and embraced it for what it was, but it wasn't as dramatic. The mullet was a hairstyle for the rockstars, including Billy Ray Cyrus. It entitles short layers around the face and single-layered long hair in the back. If you watched Hannah Montana as a youngster like I did, you'd know a mullet as "business in the front, party in the back". It is just amazing!
These are some looks that will never be forgotten and the parents of my generation will always be mocked for these hairstyles while looking through old family photos. I do have a lot of compassion for the people who got these looks on point though because they must have spent hours trying to get as much volume and height as possible!
